Paliser Bay Gardens

· Stone walls, mounds, platforms and alignments to be found over miles of coastline between Whatarangi station to Black Rocks, near the lighthouse, a the southern tip of North Island

· These have been radiocarbon dated to between 1141 and 1608AD.

· The Maori did not build in stone

· Walls can be seen to run at right angles to the coast, others form rectangular enclosures and some are circular

· Large stones can also been found placed at regular intervals

· These gardens show the presence of a well organised agricultural community proficient in geometrical design.
