Shag Point, South of Moeraki, South Island, New Zealand.
(170d, 49′, 48E. 45d, 28′, 20S)
This canal 200m long x 10m wide and 2m deep was designed to handle 10m x 4m sampans loaded with coal from the adjacent mine. A set of ladder locks connected it to a small harbour also constructed by the Chinese. A magnetic anomaly survey along the inland bank of the canal indicated aqueducts at regular intervals, these carried make up water from the hillside. The outline of one sampan was also located at the listed longitude/latitude coordinates in the canal.

This harbour was constructed by the Chinese to exploit the local coal reserves. The ladder locks connecting it to the canal have been backfilled by later mining spoil. The harbour is slightly North of the modern harbour whose stone cut quay can still be seen. The modern harbour was accessed by road and railway.
