THE CATLINS: Introduction

This area is renowned for its huge sandy bays with wonderful beaches, some 3km long, backed by high sand hills. Each bay is separated from its’ neighbour by rocky headlands.

The largest town is Balclutha situated on the Clutha River. The cartographic evidence, i.e. linear navigation islands, is that this river, at some time, has been converted to form a navigable transportation highway.
