THE CATLINS: Kaka Point

KAKA POINT.

At a picnic spot (46d, 23`, 26S – 169d, 14`, 54E), there was evidence on both sides of the modern road of man-made ramparts. Within the ramparts of the block nearest the sea. MAS indicated the foundations of standard Chinese barrack blocks. Adjacent to the site lay a heavily reeded area, creek fed. MAS indicated a 11.5m wide stone canal down the beach from this point. The reeded area was on private land and inaccessible, so it was not possible to ascertain the existence of a junk. There is local historical evidence of a Maori settlement on this site c. mid 1800s, presumably taking advantage of the existence of the Chinese fortified ramparted site.
