BANKS PENINSULA: Stony Bay

(43d, 51`, 20S – 173d, 02`, 30E)

Entering the bay by the BP track one was immediately struck by the man-made terrace at right angles to the shoreline. The terrace is c 50m x 40m and 2m high and dominated half of the small inland section of this small bay. Visible sections of the original stonework of a 40m x 36m walled barracks could be seen. MAS indicated the presence of the foundations of four barracks of the usual 8+1 pattern. Accommodation for 264men at 8 men per room, assuming the end room, the only one paved (as in the Roman design), was either a communal eating room or a storeroom.

MAS over the area between the creek and the ramparts for the elevated flat area indicated a harbour, enclosing a 47m x 11m junk, with its anchors down. There was also evidence of a channel to a point lower than the high tide position on the beach to enable the junk to access the sea. There was abundant evidence of dams within the creek, indicating that it had been navigated.
